Congressman: Charlotte protesters ‘hate white people because white people are successful’
by Peter Holley
His comments drew the ire of local politicians and the state’s Democratic Party, which labeled his remarks “racist,” according to the News & Observer. “These comments are inexcusable,” North Carolina Democratic Party Executive Director Kimberly Reynolds said. “At a time when we need calm and understanding while we learn more about the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, Congressman Pittenger is fanning the flames of hate with his racist rhetoric. This sort of bigotry has become all too common under the party of Donald Trump. Our great state should not be represented by someone who would make such hateful comments. “Congressman Pittenger must apologize, and Gov. [Pat] McCrory and every Republican leader in this state should denounce this hateful rhetoric immediately.”

CHARLOTTE PROTESTS

Protesters take to Charlotte streets for a fourth night
by the Associated Press
The North Carolina Democratic Party, as well as Hillary Clinton called for the police video to be released.
"Too many questions remain in the tragic killing of Keith Lamont Scott. We advocate continued calm and peace in Charlotte. But the Scott family deserves answers. To that end, all videos of the shooting should be released and an independent investigation must be conducted," said NCDP Chair Patsy Keever. "We cannot move forward without transparency and accountability."

NCGOP head: Charlotte mayor ‘a disgrace’
by Laura Leslie
The state Democratic Party countered Woodhouse’s accusations of hyper-partisanship with its own accusations. “While state and local leaders were focused on ensuring peace in Charlotte, the NC GOP and McCrory campaign staff attempted to undermine local leadership and incite fear. What a disgrace," said party spokesman Dave Miranda, who also noted that Woodhouse had not said anything about a controversial statement by Republican 9th District Congressman Robert Pittenger. "It’s clear that members of Governor McCrory’s campaign team and the state Republican Party are intent on destabilizing a tense situation – even contradicting the Governor in the process. These staffers should be held accountable for their actions,” Miranda said.

REPUBLICAN HB2 FAKEOUT

News & Observer
HB2 might not have been fully repealed in compromise, NC House speaker says
by Colin Campbell
N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore offered some new details about a failed House Bill 2 compromise between the legislature and Charlotte leaders in a TV interview Wednesday night. “There was substantial support in the House caucus to look at a reset” if Charlotte acted first, Moore said. But the speaker indicated that some parts of HB2 would have remained in effect as leaders had planned to “get rid of most of those provisions and just make sure we kept in the bathroom piece and the other things.”

House leader: Deal may not have led to full HB2 repeal
by Associated Press
The North Carolina House leader says a state law restricting LGBT anti-discrimination rules may not have been fully repealed even if Charlotte leaders had agreed this month to pull back their city ordinance that led to House Bill 2.
Recalling the situation, Moore said that, if Charlotte would "back off of that ordinance," the General Assembly would "get rid of most of those provisions and just make sure that we kept in the bathroom piece." Asked Thursday by The Associated Press to clarify his comments, Moore said there was legislative support for a full repeal of House Bill 2. But he wrote in an email there were a "number of options on the table dependent upon what Charlotte was willing to do." He said Roberts "precluded any potential options from being formally considered."

The Charlotte ‘compromise’ to repeal HB2 was a sham. A state leader just admitted it.
by Zack Ford
It’s a good thing Charlotte didn’t bite, and not just because it would have unnecessarily rolled back LGBT rights. House Speaker Tim Moore (R) publicly admitted this week that even in the best case scenario, they were never prepared to repeal all of HB2. They would have always left in the restrictions on which restrooms transgender people can use, even though that’s exactly the provision that has prompted nationwide boycotts by businesses, entertainers, and sports leagues.

TEACHER PAY

News & Observer
NC Democrats use budget memo to bash McCrory on education
by Lynn Bonner
Democrats said this year’s memo demonstrates that McCrory is not as dedicated to education as he says he is. Democratic legislators at a news conference Monday called this year’s teacher raises an “election-year gimmick.” If McCrory felt strongly about education, he could have exempted the state Department of Public Instruction from the mandate to suggest cuts, said state Sen. Floyd McKissick, a Durham Democrat. McCrory is trying to “hoodwink the public into thinking and believing that he is for increases in teacher pay, that he’s for increases in the education budget when, in reality, the memo is clear,” McKissick said.

State employee bonuses to arrive in election run-up

COAL ASH SCANDAL

Environmental advocates hope to compel McCrory’s chief of staff to testify on coal ash
by Mark Binker
"It now appears that Gov. McCrory’s chief of staff attacked a state scientist and accused him of perjury without even reading the deposition," Dave Miranda, a spokesman for the North Carolina Democratic Party, said in a statement. "Instead of taking responsibility, the governor simply let his staff smear the reputation of a state water scientist. There needs to be a full investigation of this shameful scandal immediately."

McCrory staffer under fire after calling scientist liar
by Jon Camp
The State Democratic Party also smells political blood in the water. "Why aren’t we getting to the bottom of this," asked Democratic Party Communications Director Dave Miranda. The Democratic Party submitted an open records request asking for information related to the Rudo/Ellis meeting on May 26 and it says it hasn’t heard back. "It seems like McCrory is trying to run out the clock," Miranda said. "That’s why we need an independent investigation into all of it."
